In the fall of 1996 the City of Edmonton Community Services Department initiated a Sport Matters proposal to enhance sport in Edmonton which resulted in funding from the Alberta Sport, Recreation, Parks and Wildlife Foundation Zone Sport Strategy funding to engage a City employee to advance an Edmonton sport strategy in 1997 by the City of Edmonton and the Edmonton sport community. This resulted in the Edmonton Sport Strategy "For the Love of It", which lead to the creation of the Edmonton Sport Council.
