Canadian Sport for Life (CS4L) is a movement to increase sport’s contribution in Canadian society recognizing sport as an important part of everyone’s life by promoting each child’s healthy and logical development in a sport or physical activity. The Sport Matters Group is a voluntary group of leaders who have come together to talk about the important contribution that sport makes to society and to collaborate in advancing sport and public policy. Sport Matters is very informal in nature, and does not represent the sport community (nor does it say that it does). Since adoption in 2002, the Canadian Sport Policy has represented the common vision and objectives of 14 governments (Federal, Provincial and Territorial) in the development of sport throughout Canada. The Policy continues to be advanced through a number of Priorities for Collaborative Action 2007-2012.
Canada’s high-performance sport system is at a pivotal point in its evolution, and new goals will need to be set in order to keep the momentum going. To this end, the “2010 and Beyond” Panel has been mandated to make recommendations that will build on the positive momentum being felt in Canadian sport today. This includes looking at the successful elements of Own the Podium and other related high performance initiatives; to explore options for the innovation and continuation of targeted high performance programs for the future, and to make recommendations that will build on the positive momentum that is felt in Canadian sport today.
