Workshops

The Edmonton Sport Council continuously seeks to link sport organizations and individuals to, or provide them with broad not-for-profit sector educational opportunities, and sport related education and support services. The following are the many workshops and seminars which would strengthen sport organizations.

 

Unless otherwise identified, all the educational opportunities are being held in Edmonton.

Canadian Sport for Life Workshop - September 18
Travel Teams, Athlete Swag and Trinkets:
How well are we developing younger athletes?


Does your sport have its LTAD plan in place? How can you help in its implementation? This workshop will provide an overview of the Competition Review process, an essential first step in creating meaningful competition and developmentally appropriate training. Updates from early sport leaders in implementing LTAD will demonstrate why a Competition Review is so vital for athlete development. Better Board Meetings

Wednesday Sept. 8th, 7:00 to 8:30 pm

Stanley Milner Library

 

This session is about planning and conducting effective Board meetings, so that decisions are made, information is shared and time is used well.  The format will be a presentation and interactive discussion, with a special emphasis on the roles of the participants, the items that need to be discussed, and best practices for agendas and recording. Community Investment Operating Grant Workshops

Financial Planning and Budgeting

This session is about developing a simple financial budget and presenting it to the Board. The session is aimed at Executive Directors and Treasurers. The format will be a presentation and interactive discussion in very plain language no accounting bafflegab! There will be a special emphasis on understanding where the money comes from, where it goes, what is approved at the beginning of the year and how things can change over time. Grant Writing Workshop

Writing funding proposals is a key element in the overall fund development plans for most organizations. In this workshop you will explore the world of writing to prospective funders requesting their support. You will learn how to prepare yourself and your organization to make this targeted appeal for support, about the world of funders and, how to determine if your project fits within the funding interests of the prospective funder and within your organization. Fund Raising Success: Where to Start & How to Build it!

This primer will help you understand how to ensure that your organization is ready to raise funds, select the right prospects (those you hope will give) and the right method(s) for raising those funds. There will be a strong focus on the basics -- the steps to building a fund development program that will allow your organization to successfully address its mission. Most of all, you will come to appreciate that fundraising is not just about raising money; it is about inviting others to join you in support of making your community better by adding their time, talent and money to the effort & making a difference in the lives of others. Risk Management Strategies & Tactics Seminar

Best Practices for a Successful AGM

The session will cover the requirements of legislation and bylaws, and outline the roles of the participants, the items that need to be discussed and best practices for getting decisions made in a timely manner. Nonprofit Governance Online Course
September 27, 2010 - February 28, 2011


Improving Non-Profit Governance
is an interactive online program offered by the Dalhousie University College of Continuing Education for Executive Directors and Board Members. Through this program, participants will assess the particular governance needs of their own organizations, facilitate improvements in board dynamics, help the board take ownership of its own recruitment practices, clarify the board-staff relationship, create a more appropriate executive director evaluation process, and strengthen the organization's relationship with its members and external stakeholders.

Governance Essentials Program for Directors of Not-For-Profit Organizations (NFP Program)
Program Starts: October 24, 2010


Make a difference as a not-for-profit director. The NFP Program helps directors get a better understanding of what is expected of them by focusing on fundamental learning in the five core areas of not-for-profit governance. This three-day program is equally for directors and executive directors of small and large NFPs and the aspiring director. A limited number of TELUS Scholarships are available for each program.
