WinterCity Edmonton is a City of Edmonton initiative. In 2012, the City enlisted a diverse group of volunteers to help create the WinterCity Strategy, “For The Love of Winter.” This new direction has drawn Edmontonians together to make winter more vibrant and exciting, and to fully embrace our winter spirit.

The WinterCity Edmonton website has extensive links to winter events and activities in Edmonton and the surrounding area. Also to be considered is taking advantage of Edmonton's few opportunities for tobogganing, downhill skiing or snowboarding, cross country skiing (including at Mayfair Park), or outdoor skating. Winter Walk Day, February 5, encourages people across Alberta to be active outdoors in winter. More than 800 organizations and 100,000 Albertans took part last year.

Children cross country skiing

Two major winter festivals celebrate outdoor activities in Edmonton. The Canadian Birkie Ski Festival, February 7-9, takes place at the Ukrainian Village, Elk Island National Park, and Cooking Lake-Blackfoot Provincial Recreation Area. Enjoy a fun cross-country ski festival for all ages and abilities. The Silver Skate Festival, February 7-17 at William Hawrelak Park, is a winter extravaganza of free art, culture, recreation and sports programming. Activities include Snowshoe Races, Skate Races, a Dead Cold Run, Fat Bike Race, cross country ski events (free equipment rentals) and a Winter Triathlon.

Child learning to skate

For the months of December, January and February, the City of Edmonton offers a Winter Green Shack Program for children. Get active this winter and learn to kicksled, snowshoe, cook outdoors and so much more! A complete list of activities and special events are posted on the side of Green Shacks each week.
