Most community sport in Edmonton (and Canada) is led and supported by community volunteers and organizations. Sport relies on volunteers to promote their organization, register individuals, schedule practice and competition, and coach individuals and teams.

The City of Edmonton is the primary owner of arenas, swimming pools and sport fields, and schedules the use of these facilities by community teams and leagues. The City also schedules school gymnasium use. A few community sport organizations rent or own their facility and often provide professional coaching.

Community sport operates within the competition framework developed by each provincial sport organization.

Stop Sports Injuries Logo

STOP (Sports Trauma and Overuse Prevention) Sports Injuries was initiated by the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine (AOSSM). The comprehensive public outreach program focuses on the importance of sports safety - specifically relating to overuse and trauma injuries. The initiative not only raises awareness and provides education on injury reduction, but also highlights how playing safe and smart can enhance and extend a child's athletic career, improve teamwork, reduce obesity rates and create a lifelong love of exercise and healthy activity.
